That’s why you should be doing it under a shade tree?

Agreed. Brake job in the rain today. I was fortunate that we could sit on concrete on one side. The other side was wet grass. I broke a banjo bolt on one caliper. The only place that stocked it and was keeping regular hours was 45 minutes away.

Shade Tree. It didn’t originate from the land of proper grammar.

Solid driveway or dirt?

Rain + Repairs + Dirt/Gravel = Unhappy Birddog.

Shade tree is a type of tree making it grammatically correct.

If it makes you feel any better I got to use someone's garage yesterday to do my brakes while it rained outside

Wrenching in adverse weather conditions blows. I had my hood open when it decided to get extra windy. The wind completely blew my hood back onto the windshield. Luckily the windshield was fine, but my hood now has extra “aero bits” where the edges got bent.

I agree 100%. Doing auto repairs outside in the rain is pretty terrible.

Back when I was in high school, my dad and I replaced the fuel pump on my 1981 Suburban (350 SBC) in the cold, dark, and rain. The mechanical pump is attached to the front bottom side of the engine, nothing so fancy as an electric pump in the tank. Due to placement, you have to get at it from underneath. YAY.

The whole famn damily was in the truck because we were driving back to Dallas from Houston after Thanksgiving. We broke down about a mile from a Chevy dealership, so dad walked it to get the part, and then walked it again to get another fuel line because we destroyed the original getting the old pump off.

We did the repair in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart. Of course, we weren’t carrying tools, so we bought a set of the finest tools available at Wally World. They were not fantastic.

All told, it was fucking miserable. The repair shouldn’t have been difficult, but cold dark and rainy made it so. I did a lot of holding the light and a little holding of parts in place while dad attached them. We were happy to get the damn thing fixed and get back on the road, but the usual happy “I fixed it!” feeling wasn’t enough to erase the misery that was that particular job.

I’m super happy to have a workshop with tools and lift and time to do the job when I work on cars now. Having a wife and additional cars on hand for parts runs is really nice too. I did a full engine swap in the driving rain at a LeMons race a few years back, so I can still work outside in the weather if I have to. I’m just glad that most of the time, I don’t HAVE to.
